GOLIAD, Texas -- A pickup truck carrying nearly two dozen people crashed in South Texas late Sunday, killing at least 13 people and injuring 10 others.
The overnight count of 11 fatalities in the wreck was raised to 13 after two of the injured passengers later died at the hospital.
The crash occurred around 7 p.m. near the small town of Berclair, which is in Goliad County southeast of Victoria.
State troopers and deputies with the Goliad County Sheriff?s Office were investigating what caused the crash.
Officials also want to know why a single pickup truck was carrying 23 people, but they have not yet been able to speak with the truck?s driver, who was among the seriously injured.
An early investigation indicated the Ford F-250 pickup was traveling north on Highway 59 when it struck two large trees.
Officials have not released names of the victims, but they said children were among the injured.
KHOU 11 News spoke with a traveler who came upon the scene shortly after the crash and tried to help the victims.
?We did not think that we were going to sit there and see something,? said Christina Reyes. ?I just told the kids, ?close your eyes, don?t get out of the car.??
Reyes, who is from League City, said some of the injured were crying out for their mother and asking for water.
Border patrol agents were called in to assist as some of the injured only spoke Spanish. A dozen people were taken to hospitals in Beeville, San Antonio, Victoria, and Corpus Christi. Some were listed in critical condition and transported by helicopter.
