Exclusive 'Battleship': Taylor Kitsch Gets Flirty With Brooklyn Decker

In addition to alien-vs.-soldier action, the film has a softer side, as our exclusive clip shows.

"Fire all the weapons!" Liam Neeson yells in the first "Battleship" trailer, a command dutifully followed by a young naval officer in the film but one that failed to trigger the dude-I-gotta-see-this-movie jones of many moviegoers.

But we had a feeling a lot of folks were missing the point of both the popcorn flick's whiz-bang alien-vs.-soldier brawling and the sun-dappled human-on-human seduction giving "Battleship" its warm, gooey center. The film is perfectly constructed to fill the "Transformers"-sized hole in the summer movie calendar. Audiences overseas are already responding, shelling out $58 million to check it out since the April 11 foreign release. Our turn comes on May 18.

Before then, and having seen the CGI-heavy theatrics in "Battleship" trailers, it's time to take a look at the film's softer side. That's where MTV News' Summer Movie Preview comes into play, delivering an exclusive clip featuring Taylor Kitsch and his bodacious birthday wish, Brooklyn Decker.

The scene in the clip comes early in the film, with Kitsch's unemployed slacker, Alex Hopper, sharing a sad-sack birthday party in a dingy bar with his brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgård). Then Brooklyn Decker's Samantha arrives, seeking a chicken burrito but not necessarily the attention of unemployed slackers. When unemployed slackers look like Taylor Kitsch, though, you can be pretty sure romance is going to bloom — until those pesky aliens arrive and put a damper on the relationship of two of the prettiest people on this, or any, planet.

Let's not keep Skarsgård out of the beauty contest. That's partly how he got the job. Director Peter Berg recently told MTV News that while he loved the actor's work as a vampire in "True Blood," it wasn't his résumé that won him the gig.

"All the girls in the office stormed into my office and demanded that we cast him," Berg said. "And then when I met him, my son was there, and [Alex] got out of his Audi R8 — that's my son's dream car. My son just stood there with his jaw open, staring first at him, then at his car, and he said, 'Dad, it's non-negotiable. Alex is in the movie.' "

Skarsgård's "Battleship" itch was a tad more substantive. "I was working on 'Melancholia' right before this, which is a Lars von Trier, European art-house movie. So I was excited about the combination of doing those two back-to-back," he explained to us. "But then it was also the fact that Pete is an actor and he knows actors and he cares about the characters. ... [He] talked more about the characters and the relationships than how amazing the explosions would look."

That perfectly explains the importance of our exclusive clip. "The movie is really the story of a younger brother trying to grow up and be a man like [his older brother]," Berg said. "There just happens to be an alien invasion in the middle of it."

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "The Avengers," Robert Pattinson's "Bel Ami," Kristen Stewart's "Snow White," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and more!

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

In an effort to stir the interest for Android smartphones in India -- and, to let new customers test drive its 3G network -- the carrier Reliance Communications has partnered with Google to provide 1GB of data usage for all new activations of CDMA Android handsets. The promotion is available to both pre-paid and postpaid customers, who may take advantage of the deal now through June 15th. Once aboard, subscribers will have 30 days to burn through their allotment and discover the joys of a smartphone. Additionally, the carrier will extend a similar offer for new GSM Android activations, which is set to begin on May 5th. Reliance plans to drive its promotion with an ad campaign that sports an Android bot in the carrier's colors -- though, we're still partial to green. Just sayin'.

Top US officer: 'We let the boss down' over prostitutes

New details are emerging about the widening prostitution scandal involving 11 members of the Secret Service and U.S. military, and investigators are looking into the possibility that there were even more men involved. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has admitted, "We let the boss down" over allegations of misconduct involving prostitutes against?at least 10 U.S. military members at a Colombia hotel on the eve of President Barack Obama's visit over the weekend.

Dempsey, the top U.S. military officer, told a Pentagon news conference Monday that?the leadership of the armed forces were embarrassed by the scandal, which also involves 11 members of the Secret Service.?

He said he regretted that the scandal had diverted attention from Obama's diplomacy at a Latin America summit.?

"I can speak for myself and my fellow chiefs: We're embarrassed by what occurred in Colombia, though we're not sure exactly what it is," Dempsey added, according to NBC News.

Former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino, who worked in the presidential protection division, shares his view of the scandal involving at least 11 Secret Service personnel and more than 5 military personnel.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said that the military members who are being investigated were assigned to support the Secret Service in preparation for Obama's official visit to Cartagena.

He said they were not directly involved in presidential security.

The Secret Service sent 11 of its members - including agents and uniformed officers - home from Colombia amid the allegations.

Several locals told NBC's sister network Telemundo that the Americans had been to a brothel on the outskirts of Cartagena where they were drinking, partying and watching a strip show, before bringing women back to an upscale beachfront hotel near where Obama was due to stay when he arrived the following day.?

Elite Secret Service agents among those suspended

The brothel was called the Pley Club.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Inside US lawsuit: How Apple, publishers allegedly brought Amazon to heel

US antitrust lawyers filed a lawsuit against Apple Inc. and two publishers, alleging they conspired to inflate the price of e-books, at an estimated cost to readers of $100 million.

Antitrust lawyers at the Department of Justice filed a civil lawsuit Wednesday charging Apple Inc., and two of the nation?s largest book publishers with conspiring to artificially inflate the price of e-books.

The antitrust suit was filed in federal court in New York, where three other publishers agreed to settle the same charges.

In an alleged plot that could easily rival best-selling tales published by the defendant companies, prosecutors say the five book publishers conspired over a four-year period with Apple in an attempt to force online retail giant Amazon to stop charging a deeply discounted $9.99 for new e-books.

Estimates are that the alleged plot cost readers $100 million in inflated e-book prices.

?During regular, near-quarterly meetings, we allege that publishing company executives discussed confidential business and competitive matters ? including Amazon?s e-book retailing practices ? as part of a conspiracy to raise, fix, and stabilize retail prices,? Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters in Washington.

?With today?s lawsuit, we are sending a clear message that competitors, even in rapidly evolving technology industries, cannot conspire to raise prices,? added Sharis Pozen, acting assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department?s antitrust division.

?We want to undo the harm caused by the companies? anticompetitive conduct and restore retail price competition so that consumers can pay lower prices for their e-books,? she said.

The lawsuit is the result of cooperation between the Justice Department?s Antitrust Division and the European Commission. The attorneys general of Connecticut, Texas, and 13 other states also played a role in the investigation.

In addition to Apple, the publishers named in the pending suit are Macmillan and Penguin Group, both based in New York City.

Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, and Simon & Schuster, all New York-based, have agreed to settle the lawsuit and end anticompetitive practices alleged by the government.

The alleged conspiracy revolved around the emerging market for e-books and a perceived threat to the future of the book publishing business as it presently exists.

Publishing executives were worried that Amazon?s deep-discount pricing of e-books might significantly undercut their ability to continue to sell hardcover books for $25 or more.

In addition, they worried that if e-books became too popular, upstart digital publishers ? including Amazon itself ? might enter the e-book industry and push the long-dominant publishers aside, according to court documents.

?Amazon?s move threatened the publisher defendants? traditional positions as the gate-keepers of the publishing world,? the suit says.

To rein Amazon in, the suit says, executives from the five book publishers decided to change the way they sold their books to book retailers.

Under the old rules, retailers purchased the books at a wholesale discount off the publisher?s list price. The retailers were then free to set their own bookstore prices after that.

Tiesto, Axwell, Steve Aoki 'Extremely Excited' For Electric Zoo Festival

'There is nothing like playing to a New York EDM crowd,' Aoki says of annual fest held on city's Randall's Island.

Electric Zoo Festival, Made Event's fourth annual EDM get-together, will be hitting New York's Randall's Island again come Labor Day weekend. It's estimated that nearly 85,000 fans attended last year's three-day affair. And while fans eagerly await the chance to catch some of the biggest names in dance music performing just off of New York's East River, MTV News was tickled to learn that some of the stars slated to perform are just as pumped about playing to their fans in the Big Apple.

"I love the New York crowd," returning performer and Swedish House Mafia member Axwell revealed. "And I haven't done a big festival there since I last did Electric Zoo. So I can't wait to come back!"

"It is an awesome festival in one of the most incredible settings in the world," Dutch EDM icon Tiësto explained. "How often do you get to play with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop? It is a special experience, being in the middle of a city with such a huge, energetic crowd. If you'd told me this would be possible 10 years ago, I wouldn't have believed you."

Cakes and boats are also bound to bless Electric Zoo this year as on Saturday, September 1, EZ's Riverside tent is set to go Dim Mak.

"This year, I have my own curated Dim Mak stage at Electric Zoo," Steve Aoki explained. "This is important because EZ represents the New York dance scene and community and it is one of the best communities in America. I'm extremely excited about this. There is nothing like playing to a New York EDM crowd. They are amazing!"

Flux Pavilion & Doctor P, Zeds Dead, Above & Beyond, David Guetta, Dada Life, Knife Party, Sander Van Doorn, Porter Robinson, Benny Benassi, Nicky Romero, Bloody Beetroots, Wolfgang Gartner and Luciano are but a few of the 65 artists performing at this year's Electric Zoo as of press time (the final count may be different). The festival runs from August 31 to September 2; general admission, VIP and Platinum three-days passes (priced at $299, $649 and $1199, respectively) are available at Made Event's website.

Interesting: Law Firm Leading The Antitrust Charge Against Apple Shares A Seattle Address With Amazon

1918EighthCoincidence, or conspiracy? It's a classic question that gets brought up when the details of any intriguing story start to surface. And some industry insiders are asking it in relation to the antitrust charges being brought against Apple and a group of book publishers over alleged collusion on the pricing of e-books. One fact in particular I'm hearing chatter about is that Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, the Seattle-based law firm that was the first to file charges regarding an alleged e-book price-fixing cabal back in August 2011, is very close neighbors with Amazon, the e-commerce giant that is said to be the chief corporate victim of the alleged Apple/publisher collusion. The thing is, it's not just the city of Seattle that Hagens Berman and Amazon have in common. They literally share an address.

Canon 'examining countermeasures' for 5D Mark IIIs experiencing top LCD light leak problem

Image
Looks like the honeymoon period with Canon's beastly 5D Mark III is officially over. Over the past few weeks some users have noticed that light leaking from its top-mounted LCD can affect exposure readouts, and now the company has confirmed that it's indeed an issue. Essentially, the camera's meter can experience a shift in the readout whenever the LCD's backlight turns on in a dark situation -- ensuring frustration when composing shots. There's no word on how wide-spread the problem currently is, but Canon notes that it's "examining the countermeasures" and plans to circle back once it has a solution. Interestingly, PetaPixel also reports that some folks have experienced the phenomenon when ambient light beams down on the panel as well. This isn't the first time Canon's had an issue with a shooter after its release, but hopefully a fix will be in soon. You'll find more details at the links below, but while your here, let us know if you've got a Mark III showcasing the symptoms in the comments.
