Monsters fall to Texas 4-3 in a shootout

CLEVELAND - A two-goal third-period lead wasn?t enough for the Lake Erie Monsters (25-20-2-7) Friday night, as the Texas Stars (32-13-4-4) overcame a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3 in a shootout before a crowd of 10,025 at Quicken Loans Arena.? Mike Connolly scored twice, including a shorthanded goal, for the Monsters, who have now suffered six shootout losses over their last 12 games.? Paul Carey scored to extend his point streak to six games, and Brad Malone picked up a pair of assists, giving him a four-game point streak.? The Monsters earn one point in the standings for the shootout loss.

Tomas Vincour opened the scoring for the Stars, who capitalized on a Monsters defensive zone turnover at 7:55 of the first period.

The Monsters countered with three straight goals over the course of the rest of the first and second periods, beginning with Connolly?s redirection of a Markus Lauridsen point shot at 11:15 of the first period.? The goal was the fifth of the season for Connolly, and Karl Stollery also gathered an assist.

Carey drove a rebound past Stars goalie Jack Campbell at 17:28 of the first period with assists to Cameron Gaunce and Malone.? Carey?s goal was his 14 th of the season and fifth over his last six games.

Connolly scored his second goal of the game when he tapped in the rebound from a Malone shot with the Monsters shorthanded at 6:58 of the second period, giving the Monsters a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.?

The two-goal advantage held until Francis Wathier began the comeback, scoring on a turnaround shot from the right circle at 10:39 of the third period to pull Texas to within a goal.

With 1:06 remaining, Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak picked up his own rebound following a Calvin Pickard save, and sent the puck over the line to tie the game at 3-3, ultimately forcing overtime and a shootout.

In the shootout, Paul Carey scored to give the Monsters a 1-0 lead with Lake Erie?s first attempt, before Oleksiak tied the shootout in the fourth round and Tom Wandell netted the shootout winner for the Stars in the sixth.

Pickard is 14-11-5 after the shootout loss; he stopped 39 of 42 shots.? Jack Campbell is 12-6-3 after stopping 29 of 32 for Texas.

The Monsters and Stars meet again at The Q Saturday night at 7:30 PM to wrap up Lake Erie?s three-in-three weekend with the team?s annual ?Browns Night? game.

NOTES: Carey has five goals and seven points over his current six-game point streak; only Andrew Agozzino (12/13/12-12/28/12) has had a seven-game point streak this season for the Monsters? Malone has a goal and four assists over his current four-game point streak? The Monsters are now 2-0-0-1 against Texas this season, with the four-game season series wrapping up Saturday night? The Monsters home record moves to 11-9-1-4 after the shootout loss, while the Stars improve to 18-7-2-1 on the road; only Syracuse (20) has more road wins than Texas? The Monsters were 0-2 on the power play, snapping a string of four straight games with a power play goal for the Monsters, who were 6-16 on the power play in four games leading up to Friday?s shootout loss to the Stars? The Monsters were 3-3 on the penalty kill, making them 6-6 on the penalty kill over their last two games.

Symbolic wedding at Union Bay Gaol

Updated: February 21, 2013 4:36 PM

The Second World War was raging in Europe, Canada was at war with Germany.

In 1939, three young Germans were in United States illegally. The Americans, although they had not yet entered the war, wanted all aliens gone or imprisoned.

In California, the three young men got passage on a Greek freighter heading to Siberia. The ship stopped at Union Bay to coal at the port.

The three decided they did not want to spend the war in Russia, so they jumped ship in Union Bay. After spending a wet night wandering around in the bush, they tried to hitch a ride on the highway.

The first car that came along was a police car. They were arrested and imprisoned in the Union Bay Gaol (jail) before being sent to a prisoner of war camp in Ontario, where they worked on a tomato farm. Six years passed before they were sent back to Germany.

One of the three, Fredrick Furber, married in Germany and brought his young family to Canada, being sponsored by the farmer where he had worked as a prisoner. He gradually moved west, ending up on Vancouver Island.

His son Richard had heard the story all his life, so he and his bride-to-be, Brenda Jeeves, thought it would be neat to honour his father by being married in the old gaol at Union Bay.

Janette Glover-Geidt, chair of the Union Bay Historical Society that owns and operates the gaol as a museum, appreciated the historical significance of the request and got caught up in the excitement.

Rev. Ray Brandon fell in with the plan and performed a lovely service for the couple on Feb. 13, 2013.

Cassini sheds light on cosmic particle accelerators

Feb. 19, 2013 ? During a chance encounter with what appears to be an unusually strong blast of solar wind at Saturn, NASA's Cassini spacecraft detected particles being accelerated to ultra-high energies. This is similar to the acceleration that takes place around distant supernovas.

Since we can't travel out to the far-off stellar explosions right now, the shockwave that forms from the flow of solar wind around Saturn's magnetic field provides a rare laboratory for scientists with the Cassini mission -- a partnership involving NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency -- to observe this phenomenon up-close. The findings, published this week in the journal Nature Physics, confirm that certain kinds of shocks can become considerably more effective electron accelerators than previously thought.

Shock waves are commonplace in the universe, for example in the aftermath of a stellar explosion as debris accelerate outward in a supernova remnant, or when the flow of particles from the sun -- the solar wind -- impinges on the magnetic field of a planet to form a bow shock. Under certain magnetic field orientations and depending on the strength of the shock, particles can be accelerated to close to the speed of light at these boundaries. These may be the dominant source of cosmic rays, high-energy particles that pervade our galaxy.

Scientists are particularly interested in "quasi-parallel" shocks, where the magnetic field and the "forward"-facing direction of the shock are almost aligned, as may be found in supernova remnants. The new study, led by Adam Masters of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Sagamihara, Japan, describes the first detection of significant acceleration of electrons in a quasi-parallel shock at Saturn, coinciding with what may be the strongest shock ever encountered at the ringed planet.

"Cassini has essentially given us the capability of studying the nature of a supernova shock in situ in our own solar system, bridging the gap to distant high-energy astrophysical phenomena that are usually only studied remotely," said Masters.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, ESA and ASI, the Italian space agency. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

ID theft on rise: 12.6 million victims in 2012, study shows

By Bob Sullivan, Columnist, NBC News

Identity theft is on the rise again, says a new industry-sponsored study, reversing a promising two-year trend.?

Some 12.6 million Americans were victimized by ID theft in 2012, the second-highest total since the Federal Trade Commission began counting victims in 2003? and roughly 1 million more than 2011, according to the survey by Javelin Strategy and Research. The record ? 13.9 million victims ? was set in 2009. ?

The criminals made off with $3 billion more than in 2011, as well. ?Overall, slightly more than 1 in 20 consumers -- 5.26 percent -- were victims last year, the survey found.

A large portion of the increase was driven by "dramatic jumps" in more-serious forms of ID theft, such as new account fraud, where a criminal uses a victim's personal information to open new credit cards or other kinds of loans. New account fraud jumped 50 percent last year, according to the report, with the total fraud loss doubling year over year to just under $10 billion

"I don't think (the data) shows that banks are losing control," said Jim Van Dyke, author of the study, when asked about the significance of the new data. "But it's really wise to look at where we haven't gotten anything under control, and that's new account fraud."

The news comes amid a cascade of hacker stories this week, giving the impression computer criminals are gaining the upper hand on many fronts.? Agents working on behalf of the Chinese army have successfully attacked dozens of U.S. companies, according to a report issued Tuesday by U.S. security firm Mandiant.? Large U.S. media companies have also fought off Chinese hackers, and not always successfully, according to several reports. Burger King and Jeep suffered embarrassing Twitter account takeovers. And both Twitter and Facebook have had to announce in recent weeks that they had been hacked.

Javelin's data is based on telephone surveys of U.S. adults, with consumers self-reporting details of their ID theft to survey takers and results extrapolated from their answers. The precision of such data can be questioned, but Javelin has used the same techniques for eight years, making year-to-year observations informative. The same technique was used by the FTC in 2003 when it initially reported the size of the identity theft problem as required by Congress.

Author Helaine Olen is causing a stir in the personal finance sector with her new book "Pound Foolish: Exposing the Dark Side of the Personal Finance Industry."

The survey was sponsored by CitiGroup, Visa, and Intersections LLC, which provides identity theft prevention services to consumers.? Van Dyke says the sponsors were not involved in tabulation, analysis or reporting of the results.

Bank security analyst Avivah Litan of the security consultant firm Gartner, who has run her own ID theft victim surveys in the past, said the Javelin survey's results are consistent with what she's heard from bank security officials.

"Even in an age of cyberespionage and advanced targeted attacks, good old-fashioned consumer identity theft continues to escalate," Litan said. "It's highly unfortunate that even after all this time and effort by banks regulators high tech entrepreneurs and law enforcement that the bad guys are still coming out ahead. It's high time that we put more intelligent efforts into winning this cyberwar, whether it?s against amateur identity thieves or foreign infiltrators."

Other interesting findings from the Javelin report:

*Consumers who received "breach" notifications from companies indicating their personal data had been compromised?were much more likely than others to be victims of ID theft. ?And that trend is rising. In 2011, 1 in 5 recipients were victims; and last year, the likelihood increased to 1 in 4.?

*Fraud victims living below the poverty line were more than twice as likely to know their imposter personally -- so-called "familiar fraud" -- than wealthier consumers. The survey found that 29 percent of poor victims knew their imposter vs. 12 percent of those living above the poverty line.

*It's important to note that despite the rise in new account fraud, simple credit card fraud still accounts for about two-thirds of all ID theft. Those victims had a relatively easy time fixing the problem, reporting an average of 11 hours of disruption. On the other hand, 51 percent of victims of "account-takeover fraud," which allows criminals to withdraw funds from existing checking accounts and run similar schemes, said their lives were "severely impacted" and they spent an average of 37 hours resolving their frauds.

Van Dyke also pointed out there are hidden victims in ID theft, in addition to banks and consumers who lose money.? Among consumers who were victims of fraud, 15 percent said they reacted by avoiding online retailers, and half of that group specifically avoided small retailers. Only 8 percent of that group said they avoided large merchants after a fraud.

"Small online merchants are really being singled out," he said.? In other words, they are hit both by fraud, and by lost sales due to the impression of risk created by fraud. "Consumers are very sympathetic to small merchants, but when you see this lack of trust play out, it underscores how significant the problem is and how important it is that we deal with it.?

Apple takes new direction with iPad ads 'Alive' and 'Together'

Apple on Sunday released two new TV commercials for the iPad and iPad mini, each having a catchy new flavor not seen in previous campaigns.

The two advertisements, appropriately titled "Alive" and "Together," both start out with a flurry of adjectives shown in quick succession to the beat of a drum, each highlighting one of the over 300,000 apps made specifically for iPad.
Apple's new ads focus on the software driving its tablet lineup, an ecosystem exclusive to iOS that rivals have yet to match.

As for the commercials themselves, the upbeat and fast-paced music is a departure from previous spots that were more subdued, with a single narrator describing various hardware attributes. The most recent ads, especially for the iPhone 5, were somewhat humorous compared to the usual "classy" promotions put out by the company.

AppleInsider on Saturday offered a first look at Apple's accompanying print campaign, which features the same software-focused scheme as today's TV spots.

Breakthrough architecture for quantum computers proposed

Feb. 15, 2013 ? A team of researchers at the University of Waterloo's Institute for Quantum Computing has proposed a new computational model that may become the architecture for a scalable quantum computer.

In a paper to be published in the journal Science this week, the research team of IQC Associate Professor Andrew Childs, post-doctoral fellow David Gosset and PhD student Zak Webb proposes using multi-particle quantum walks for universal computation. In a multi-particle quantum walk, particles live on the vertices of a graph and can move between vertices joined by an edge. Furthermore, nearby particles can interact with each other.

Traditionally, a quantum algorithm is implemented on a register of qubits by actively manipulating the qubits according to a set of desired operations. In this new model, a desired quantum algorithm can be implemented by letting the qubits "quantum walk" on an appropriately chosen graph, without having to control the qubits. The process is analogous to a billiard-ball computer where classical logic gates are performed using collisions.

Many previous quantum-walk experiments have not been scalable. But this new model proposed by Childs and his team identifies the requirements to implement quantum walks so they have the potential for significant quantum speedup, paving the way for scalable future experiments. The model could be naturally realized in a variety of systems, including photons with interactions mediated by superconducting circuits.

Quantum walk-based computing is particularly promising because of its universality. "In principle we can cast any quantum algorithm into this model," says Childs. In future work, Childs and his team are interested in applying the model to develop new quantum algorithms and to study problems in quantum computational complexity.

Rubio to Israel and Jordan

In a statement posted to his website, Florida senator Marco Rubio announced that he's leaving today for Israel and Jordan.?"Today, I am departing to the Middle East on an official trip in my capacities as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and Foreign Relations Committee. I will be visiting Jordan and Israel," writes Rubio. "This will be my first visit to Jordan and my second to Israel."

Rubio explains who he'll be meeting with:

In Jordan, I look forward to meeting with King Abdullah as well as other members of the Jordanian government, which remains among our most loyal allies in the region in trade, cultural exchanges and especially in combatting terrorism. I am also interested in learning more firsthand about the impact the Syrian civil war and how the humanitarian crisis that has resulted is impacting Jordan and the region.?
?
As is customary in each country I visit on official business, I will visit America's embassy to meet with the brave men and women stationed there from our foreign service, military and intelligence services and receive a country briefing from each.?
?
In Israel, I look forward to meeting with our embassy, military and intelligence personnel as well, followed by visits with Israeli political, defense, intelligence and business leaders. I am especially looking forward to meeting with President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss various areas of mutual interest, including the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. I also look forward to meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Fayyad.

And he writes, "America's friendship with Israel is a truly special one, and we must continue to do all we can to support this beacon of democracy, religious freedom and free enterprise in the heart of an unstable region. As Iran continues its pursuit of a nuclear weapon, we must continue to apply pressure through every possible means in order to prevent a nuclear Iran. And I look forward to assessing the impact American security assistance is having and discussing the importance of the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt and how we can maintain it during this time of great uncertainty and tumult in Egypt."

Will Washington Trust Tehran?

Will Washington grasp the hand being offered by the Iranian people??

By Franklin Lamb

Tehran.

Truth told, this American observer has attended his share of international conferences and has traveled in more than 70 countries. But never has he visited such??a complex country, evolving culture,??and striving??energized society, populated by idealistic people of great warmth, sense of humor and caring for those in need as he experiences in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Except when traveling in his own country.

Being in Iran during these tense times is to experience an epiphany. Which is that Iranians and Americans have so very many needs and interests in common-yes even in our religious beliefs- that both peoples should immediately repair our countries relations and return to the days when 60,000 Iranian students studied in the US and thousands of Americans lived and worked in Iran- all in singular harmony and with myriad mutual benefits.

There is probably no country more misunderstood in America than Iran And its due almost entirely to politically motivated demonizations and misrepresentations, including, but not limited to, what President Ahmadinejad really said during speeches relating to the US and the West and the historical imperative to liberate occupied Palestine and every country?s right to develop nuclear energy and to live independently and free of US-led western hegemony. Most Americans? perceptions of Iran, according to Iranian friends, are limited to images of President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad accused of delivering anti-American speeches.

The deep connection among Muslims and Christians from the seventh century sacrifice at Karbala by Hussein bin Ali and the first century sacrifice at Calvary by Jesus Christ, established forever a claimed divine principle of sacrifice of one?s self to resist injustice for the greater good of the community. This bond underpins and connects the two religions and their followers inextricably.

There is probably no country more misunderstood in America than Iran And its due almost entirely to politically motivated demonizations and misrepresentations, including, but not limited to, what President Ahmadinejad really said during speeches relating to the US and the West and the historical imperative to liberate occupied Palestine and every country?s right to develop nuclear energy and to live independently and free of US-led western hegemony.?Most Americans? perceptions of Iran, according to Iranian friends, are limited to images of President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad accused of delivering anti-American speeches.

Another example is the media reports of the 2/09/13 celebration of the 34th?anniversary of the Iranian revolution where the BBC and most other media reported the crowds were ?frenzied and chanting death to America.???I was there and this report is rubbish.??I did hear from time to time a few chants mixed in with revolutionary songs, religious exhortations, and just plain fun. Helping others by offering water and heavy laden older citizens or kids was the motif.

People were happy not angry and they could not have been more friendly or curious about the Americans they came upon and who helped them pick up Iranian leaflet flags that blew or were dropped onto the streets as the Americans understood Iranian pride in their flag and not wanting to see it walked on or subjected to disrespect.

One does not have to look further than the morning newspapers for examples and to find the likes of Zionist apologist, Iranophobe and Islamophode Jennifer Rubin, in her Washington Post screed.??Ms. Rubin, on Valentine?s Day had only poisonous invective in her heart for any American- even cupid one imagines- who would dare express any remotely objective idea about Iran. Rubin, a former AIPAC volunteer, lambasted Obama?s nominee for Secretary of Defense, former US Senator, Chuck Hagel, as nearly all 52 Zionist organizations in America have done this past month, because he advocates mutual respect and friendship with Iran. Hagel?s unforgiveable sins includee his words on the subject of criminal US-led sanctions against Iran and Syria and the need to build trust and normalize relations through dialogue.

Said Hagel about U.S.-Iran relations: ?We shouldn?t be putting conditions on talks or putting all other issues to the side except one issue that we will ?dictate? to Iran.?????As far back as 2007, Hagel stated that ?In the Middle East of the 21st century, Iran will be a key center of gravity? a significant regional power. The United States cannot change that reality. America?s strategic 21st-century regional policy for the Middle East must acknowledge the role of Iran today and over the next 25 years.? Hagel continued: ?On Afghanistan, the United States and Iran found common interests ? defeating the Taliban and Islamic radicals, stabilizing Afghanistan, stopping the opium production and the flow of opium coming into Iran. From these common interests emerged common actions working toward a common purpose. It was in the interests of Iran to work with the U.S. in Afghanistan. It was not a matter of helping America or strengthening America?s presence in Central Asia. It was a clear-eyed and self-serving action for Iran.?

Hagel may have erred a bit on Afghanistan and the Taliban, but Rubin found Hagel?s point of view treasonous and has joined the??the US Zionist lobby?s call for a witch-hunt when she asks her readers: ?Why would the president select someone so deferential toward the Islamic revolutionary government? ..During the Congressional recess, the Senate should think about that.?And it might be interesting to find out who was helping him with these intensely pro-Tehran speeches.

In Iran today one does not hear Rubinesque hate speech or even lectures about the 1953 US-UK overthrow of Iranian leader?Mohammad?Mossedeg or the shooting down?on July 3, 1988 of the commercial passenger aircraft Iran Air Flight 655 (IIR655)?or the US giving chemical weapons to Iraq, during its US backed aggression, or even the assassination of Iranian scientists or a number of other US green lighted aggressions against the country.

Much more often, conversations are likely to turn to the need to improve relations and friendly questions about what foreigners are experiencing in Iran and if they need assistance in doing something or information about their country.??Iranians are as open as Americans are by their very nature, and unlike many other countries no subject for discussion is taboo. For this observer it included??topics such as the ?morality police?, execution of drug dealers and homosexuals, ?stoning? of women,??attacks on?the??Bah??? Faith,?which is the country?s second-largest religion after Islam, the??2009 ?Green Revolution? and any other subject that came to mine, including drinking alcohol and public dating.

One hilarious conversation this observer had with four early 20?s female students during a Conference last week was about the number (more than 60%) of Chador wearing women who openly wear makeup these days, how Iranian society is changing rapidly, and the amount of hair some women expose while in public and wondering if this was not prohibited by Fatwa and how they deal with it. Their responses were immediate and nearly all at once.??No one had even seen one of the Western hyped ?morality police? for a long time and they are few and far between.??One young lady explained that its true she wears her hijab 2/3?s the way back on her head and ?if one of those guys dares to say something I will either tell him to mind his own business or if I am in a good mood I will act really, really surprised, shrug my shoulders, wink at him and say something like, ?Oh so very sorry, really I am!.??It was a big gust of wind that must have blown it back on my head without me noticing!? Even if there had not even been so much as a soft breeze in days.

Iranian women are smart, strong willed-even a bit pushy at times and naturally alluring. Who would want to join some ?morality police? unit???The ladies explained that if one comes up to you on the street and if you are really rude to him and tell him to get lost, or worse, you might get a ticket and your parents would have to come to the police station and sign a pledge that you would try to do better about trying to observe some modesty in public. Again rather different from what the MSM tells us in the West.

And it?s clear whether attending an international??conference on Hollywoodism (www.hollywoodism.org) at the Azadi (Freedom Hotel-formerly the pre-Revolution Hyatt ), traveling on the Tehran subway (far cleaner than New Yorks!) exploring street souks, visiting the Holy Defense Museum (explaining the 8 years Iran-Iraq war) or??visiting the home of Imam Ruhollah??Khomeini, who led the 1979 Revolution and was Iran?s leader until his death on?June 3,1989?in or walking, for miles it seemed, among the nearly two million people marching to Azadi Square to commemorate this month?s 34th?anniversary of the Revolution when the people of Iran overthrew the American agent, Shah Reza Palavi, that the Iranian people are kind and they are gifted.

When I got on the crowded Tehran subway, two young men immediately stood up to offer this observer their seats.??And then we engaged in a very interesting long animated conversation.??Said, Hamzeh, ?You know, we feel like we understand America and we should be friends. Both of our countries are culturally unique somehow. Your country evolved from European culture but moved in very distinct direction. In our history Islam arrived via the Arabs but as you have been seeing I am sure, our identity is completely different from Arab countries.?

Mahmoud joined in: ?Our society is also made up of many minorities, but we have a single Iranian identity and are very proud of our culture. We?re also familiar with Western ways. For the last 200 years, we were open to the Western world and influenced by European culture, even if some of the ideas, like democracy, have never had a chance to really develop properly but we will continue trying. But we also know what it?s like to be a superpower. For us it was a long time ago, but we played an important role in this part of the world for many centuries so we can never see ourselves as subject to western or eastern hegemony.?

No experience impressed a group of American visiting Iran, including this one, than the home of Imam Kohmeini and learning from his neighbors and students about the man, scholar and revolutionary. Visiting his home and Hassineyeh which have been kept just as they were the day he died, one neighbor recounted how

Ayatollah?s Khomeini?s wife?Khadije Saghafi, who passed away in 2009,?told her friends that she had only one wish her whole life that the Imam never granted to her.??And that was that she wished for him to ask her for a glass of water at least once. But he never did. The sweet and gentle husband and father did not want even the wind to visit his family?s faces too harshly or for himself to impose on them.???Another neighbor told us, ?When we visited his home we often found the Imam washing the dishes, sweeping the floor, and helping in other household chores.

According to others who knew him well, the Imam led a life of utmost piety and spirituality. In the severe winters of Qom, the he would wake up each night, perform ablution?the act of washing oneself for ritual purification) with ice water, and offer his night prayers. His?Mafatih(prayer almanac) had to be rebound every few weeks because of how much he used it. Before he began lecturing his students on political activism, he emphasized to them the importance of spirituality and attaining the nearness of Allah.

The simplicity of life style and the modesty of Iran?s revolutionary, Imam Khomeini leader has universal appeal including American ideals.

There is every reason for Washington?s new administration to reach out to Iran, not just with words but with actions.??The American and Iranian people fervently want this and it wills inestimably benefit both societies. The solution to positive the current straightened Iran-US relations includes contact, visitations, discussions and more discussions and from this both peoples can pressure their governments to leave the past behind and develop bonds of friendship.

Facebook gets unwelcome look at hackers' dark side

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Facebook is getting an unwelcome look at the shady side of the hacking culture that CEO Mark Zuckerberg celebrates.

Intruders recently infiltrated the systems running the world's largest online social network but did not steal any sensitive information about Facebook's more than 1 billion users, according to a blog posting Friday by the company's security team.

The unsettling revelation is the latest breach to expose the digital cracks in a society and an economy that is storing an ever-growing volume of personal and business data online.

The news didn't seem to faze investors. Facebook Inc.'s stock dipped 10 cents to $28.22 in Friday's extended trading.

The main building at Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters lists its address as 1 Hacker Way. From there, Facebook serves as the gatekeeper for billions of potentially embarrassing photos and messages that get posted each month.

This time, at least, that material didn't get swept up in the digital break-in that Facebook said it discovered last month. The company didn't say why it waited until the afternoon before a holiday weekend to inform its users about the hack.

It was a sophisticated attack that also hit other companies, according to Facebook, which didn't identify the targets.

"As part of our ongoing investigation, we are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineering teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future," Facebook wrote on the blog.

Online short-messaging service Twitter acknowledged being hacked earlier this month. In that security breakdown, Twitter warned that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 of the more than 200 million accounts set up on its service.

Late last month, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal ? two of the three largest U.S. newspapers ? said they were hit by China-based hackers believed to be interested in monitoring media coverage of topics that the Chinese government deemed important.

Facebook didn't identify a suspected origin of its hacking incident, but provided a few details about how it apparently happened.

The security lapse was traced to a handful of employees who visited a mobile software developer's website that had been compromised, which led to malware being installed on the workers' laptops. The PCs were infected even though they were supposed to be protected by the latest anti-virus software and were equipped with other up-to-date protection.

Facebook linked part of the problem to a security hole in the Java software that triggered a safety alert from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security last month. The government agency advised computer users to disable Java on their machines because of a weakness that could be exploited by hackers.

Oracle Corp., the owner of Java, has since issued a security patch that it says has fixed the problem. In its post, Facebook said it received the Java fix two weeks ago.

Facebook never mentioned the word "hack" in describing the breach. That, no doubt, was by design because hacking is a good thing in Zuckerberg's vernacular.

To most people, hacking conjures images of malevolent behavior by intruders listening to private voicemails and villains crippling websites or breaking into email accounts.

Zuckerberg provided his interpretation of the word in a manifesto titled "The Hacker Way" that he included in the documents that the company filed for its initial public offering of stock last year.

"The word 'hacker' has an unfairly negative connotation from being portrayed in the media as people who break into computers," Zuckerberg wrote. "In reality, hacking just means building something quickly or testing the boundaries of what can be done."

Pluto moon names to be selected by public voting, we talk to astronomer Mark Showalter

Image

P4 and P5 aren't the sorts of names that impart the manner of excitement space exploration companies and organizations are looking to inspire in the next generation of enthusiasts (nor the customers, philanthropists and tax payers destined to fund those explorations). The SETI Institute, a private non-profit, best known for its ties to the eponymous search for extraterrestrial intelligence in the universe, is looking to add a little bit of audience participation to the act of naming Pluto's newly discovered moons, which sport those rather uninspired alphanumeric designations.

Beginning today, SETI will open up an online contest to name the moons, both of which were discovered via the Hubble Telescope fairly recently. As with the rest of the dwarf planet's moons, the organization's asking that the names be associated with Hades (the underworld), with ties to Greek or Roman mythology. SETI will pre-select candidates and is also allowing for write-in candidates (though it's retaining editorial discretion here, so, for better or worse, we're not likely to see a Baba Booey moon in the near future).

On a recent trip to the Bay Area, we had the opportunity to speak to Mark Showalter, the senior research scientist at the organization's Carl Sagan Center, an astronomer who played a key role in the discovery of the celestial bodies. You can check out that interview just after the break, before heading off to vote. Showalter is also co-hosting a Google+ Hangout with astronomer Hal Weaver today at 2PM ET.

kumarabilai: Self-improvement and the Law of Attraction | Self ...

Self-Improvement and Law of Attraction

It is not surprising at all that the concepts of self-improvement and the law of attraction are deeply connected and related. Without one, the other one would simply not work. Why? Simply put, a person who does not love himself enough to realize that he should improve himself will not be able to apply any concepts or processes to attract anything or anyone. Attraction does not simply happen to people who want to apply these laws, or they should have already done so in the first place. The reason people look into these laws and methods to attract whatever it is they want to attract is because their current situation does not result to anything. Thus, they look for these laws so they could have better chances at attracting things or to improve their lives. And yes, these laws require improvement, particularly in the way the person views himself.

People with unhealthy levels of self-esteem will definitely have a difficult time getting?favorable?results when adhering to these laws, precisely because they have a difficult time loving the people they primarily should ? themselves. They block goodness and positivity from coming into their lives. So, it would be a herculean task to visualize and believe that they will be attracting things, especially when they do not find themselves attractive.

These beliefs will definitely be huge blocks for a person with low self-esteem in following the law of attraction:

  • If a person believes that he is not good enough, nothing good will happen, much less will attraction occur.

Low self-esteem usually causes a person to compare himself to others, and resulting to that person finding himself lacking in certain levels. Whether it is a lack of physical attractiveness, intelligence, skills, or goodness, this is a factor that will lead to the next point.

  • A person with low self-esteem, when comparing, concludes that other people deserve everything more.

Since people with low-self-esteem think better of other people, they lead themselves to the conclusion that they are not deserving of attracting things, and that the other people, who they perceive to be better, are. Since they do not think of themselves as valuable compared to other people, they then do not deserve whatever it is they want, especially if other better people don?t get the same thing they want.

  • People with low self-esteem think that the universe is punishing them.

These people feel that whatever misfortune or adverse event that happens to them is inevitable, since they deserve it.? Whenever something good happens, they pass up the chance to enjoy it, since they do not believe they deserve it, and someone better is deserving of it.

In order for people with low self-esteem to have a crack at being successful in attraction, they have to first realize that self-improvement is a pertinent step. One of the biggest steps in improving oneself is improving the way a person views himself. Otherwise, the stumbling blocks mentioned earlier will definitely appear, hindering any chance of attracting anything.

Fugitive's rant puts focus on evolving LAPD legacy

Simpson trial. (AP Photo/Ric Francis)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Fugitive ex-Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner's claim in an online "manifesto" that his career was undone by racist colleagues conspiring against him comes at a time when it's widely held that the police department has evolved well beyond the troubled racial legacy of Rodney King and the O.J. Simpson trial.

Dorner, who is suspected in a string of vengeance killings, has depicted himself as a black man wronged, whose badge was unjustly taken in 2008 after he lodged a complaint against a white female supervisor.

"It is clear as day that the department retaliated toward me," Dorner said in online writings authorities have attributed to him. Racism and officer abuses, he argued, have not improved at LAPD since the King beating but have "gotten worse."

Dorner's problems at the LAPD, which ended with his dismissal, played out without public notice more than four years ago, as the department gradually emerged from federal oversight following a corruption scandal. At the time, the officer ranks were growing more diverse and then-Chief William Bratton was working hard to mend relations with long-skeptical minorities.

"This is no longer your father's LAPD," Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa declared in 2009, after the federal clampdown was ended.

Civil rights attorney Connie Rice said the department should review the Dorner case and his claims, while stressing that she is not defending the suspect in any way and is shocked by the attacks.

She said the 10,000-member force headquartered in a glass-walled high-rise in downtown Los Angeles has entered a new era.

"The open racism of the days before is gone," said Rice, who closely tracks racial issues inside the department and has faced off against the LAPD in court. "The overall culture has improved enormously."

Police say Dorner shot and killed a couple in a parking garage last weekend in Irvine, the beginning of a rampage he said was retribution for his mistreatment at LAPD. A search for him continued Saturday, centered on the mountain town of Big Bear Lake, where his burned-out pickup truck was found Thursday.

The woman who died was the daughter of a retired police captain who had represented Dorner in the disciplinary proceedings that led to his dismissal. Hours after authorities identified Dorner as a suspect in the double murder, police believe he shot and grazed an LAPD officer and later used a rifle to ambush two Riverside police officers, killing one and seriously wounding the other.

"This is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD," Dorner wrote in a 14-page online manifesto.

On Friday, a community of online sympathizers formed, echoing complaints against police that linger in some communities. One Facebook page supporting Dorner, which had over 2,300 fans by Friday evening, said "this is not a page about supporting the killing of innocent people. It's supporting fighting back against corrupt cops and bringing to light what they do."

The LAPD was once synonymous with violent and bigoted officers, whose culture and brand of street justice was depicted by Hollywood in films like "L.A. Confidential" and "Training Day."

In 1965, 34 people died when the Watts riots, triggered by a traffic stop of a black man by a white California Highway Patrol officer, exposed deep fractures between blacks and an overwhelmingly white law enforcement community.

In the 1980s, gang sweeps took thousands of youths into custody. The O.J. Simpson trial deepened skepticism of a department already tarnished by the videotaped beating of King, the black motorist who was hit with batons, kicked repeatedly and jolted with stun guns by officers who chased him for speeding. Rioting after a jury with no black members acquitted three of the LAPD officers on state charges and a mistrial was declared for a fourth lasted three days, killing 55 people.

In the Rampart scandal of the late 1990s, scores of criminal convictions were thrown out after members of an anti-gang unit were accused of beating and framing residents in a poor, largely minority neighborhood. A handful of officers were convicted of various crimes and the scandal led to federal oversight that lasted eight years.

Much has changed: Whites now make up roughly a third of the department and, while under federal authority, LAPD moved to require anti-gang and narcotics officers to disclose their finances and worked on new tools to track officer conduct.

When Bratton announced in 2009 he was stepping down, he said he hoped his legacy would be improved race relations. "I believe we have turned a corner in that issue," he said.

Dorner's own case in some ways reflects the diversity of the LAPD: the superior he accused of abuse was a woman and the man who represented him at his disciplinary hearing was the first Chinese-American captain in department history.

When Dorner, a Naval reservist, returned to LAPD after deployment to the Middle East in 2007, a training officer became alarmed by his conduct, which included weeping in a police car and threatening to file a lawsuit against the department, records show.

Six days after being notified in August 2007 that he could be removed from the field, Dorner accused the training officer, Sgt. Teresa Evans, of kicking a severely mentally ill man in the chest and left cheek while handcuffing him during an arrest.

However, his report to internal affairs came two weeks after the arrest, police and court records allege. Civilian and police witnesses said they didn't see Evans kick the man, who had a quarter-inch scratch on his cheek consistent with his fall into a bush. A police review board ruled against Dorner, leading to his dismissal.

Online, Dorner tells a different story. He argues he was "terminated for doing the right thing."

"I had broken their supposed 'Blue Line.'. Unfortunately, It's not JUST US, it's JUSTICE!!!" he wrote. Dorner said in the posting that his account was supported by the alleged victim. He also claims the board that heard his case had conflicts because of ties to Evans, the training officer.

Rice was quick to point out that while the LAPD culture has improved, there are still what she calls pockets of bad behavior.

That was echoed by Hector Villagra, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

"There has definitely been improvement from those dark days," Villagra said. "We are in a vastly different place, but there still are opportunities for improvement in this and any other police department."

Anti-gay religious group gets funding from Canadian government to work in Africa

OTTAWA - An evangelical organization that describes homosexuality as a "perversion" and a "sin" is receiving funding from the Government of Canada for its work in Uganda, where gays and lesbians face severe threats.

The federal government has denounced virulent homophobia in that East African country and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has condemned plans for an anti-gay bill that could potentially include the death penalty for homosexuals.

At the same time the government is providing $544,813 in funding for Crossroads Christian Communications ? an Ontario-based evangelical group that produces television programming ? to help dig wells, build latrines and promote hygiene awareness in Uganda through 2014.

Until Tuesday, the organization's website carried a list of "sexual sins" deemed to be "perversion": "Turning from the true and/or proper purpose of sexual intercourse; misusing or abusing it, such as in pedophilia, homosexuality and lesbianism, sadism, masochism, transvestism, and bestiality."

Lower down the page, the group asks sinners to "repent."

"God cares too much for you (and all of His children) to leave such tampering and spiritual abuse unpunished," according to the group's website.

Just hours after The Canadian Press contacted the group to ask a spokesperson about the site, the page in question disappeared from public view.

The organization is being funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. Just a few days ago the Quebec government announced its desire to create its own parallel agency because it no longer supported CIDA's policy choices.

This particular funding choice may also conflict with the federal government's own statements.

Last October, Baird denounced abuses against gays and lesbians and specifically singled out Uganda in a speech at an international conference in Quebec City.

"We will speak out on the issues that matter to Canadians ? whether it is the role and treatment of women around the world, or the persecution of gays," Baird told the Inter-Parliamentary Union conference.

"Canada will speak out."

In that speech, Baird shared the story of a Ugandan gay-rights advocate who was bludgeoned to death in his own home.

That speech provoked an angry reaction from the head of the Ugandan delegation, Rebecca Kadaga, who accused Baird of "arrogance" and "ignorance" and demanded an apology.

Crossroads defends its position on homosexuality as grounded in scripture.

"Crossroads' views on sexuality are informed by our Christian faith and values," spokeswoman Carolyn Innis told The Canadian Press in an email.

She said the projects funded by CIDA do not include evangelical work and are focused on specific objectives.

On the group's website, under the section "Who We Are," the group describes its mission the following way ? "Our motivation: To communicate a visible expression of God's love, and contribute to the transformation of lives around the world."

But that doesn't mean the group is getting involved in Uganda's homosexuality debate, Innis said.

"It has not been a practice of Crossroads to influence matters of policy in countries in which we are completing relief or development projects," she said.

Steve Foster, president of the Quebec LGBT Council, said the federal government should stop funding groups like Crossroads.

"It's unacceptable that the government would accept that kind of organization as an international-co-operation organization," Foster said.

"Taxpayers' money should not be used to finance religious groups working abroad, who furthermore contribute to the creation of discriminatory ? even inhumane and dangerous ? policy."

Foster calls it a "dangerous" shift from the government toward using religious groups to perform international development work.

He's not alone to perceive a trend.

A study by the Canadian Research Institute on Humanitarian Crisis and Aid concluded that, between 2005 and 2010, the funding for religious non-government organizations increased 42 per cent. Secular groups saw an increase of five per cent.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been asked about that disparity.

"We consider the efficiency of projects,'' Harper replied during a Montreal news conference last month. ''(We) do not consider the religion of groups promoting these projects."

As for Crossroads' opinion on homosexuality, the government sought to keep its distance.

"Our government does not endorse these particular views," Rick Roth, a Baird spokesman, said in an email.

"Canada's views are clear ? we have been strongly opposed to the criminalization of homosexuality or violence against people on the basis of their sexual orientation."

The minister responsible for CIDA, Julian Fantino, has also said funding is doled out "on merit."

A CIDA spokeswoman, Amy Mills, added in an email: "Canada's views are clear ? we have been strongly opposed to the criminalization of homosexuality or violence against people on the basis of their sexual orientation."

She offered no comment on Crossroads' views on homosexuality.

An anti-gay bill was returned to the order paper for debate in Uganda's parliament last week. The MP who tabled it has spoken of replacing the death penalty with prison sentences, but it's unclear what the final version of the legislation might look like.
