    Supersizing the sandwich generation | Inheritance ... - Financial Post

    About one-quarter of the so-called sandwich generation already has a second slice on top since they care for two or more seniors.

    Balancing the demands of family life for today?s parents can be difficult at the best of times. Times are even tougher for many a parent suddenly tasked with the responsibility of caring for their own parents as well. These people make up the sandwich generation ? those raising their children and simultaneously looking after their parents.

    But today?s changing demographics ? many of them highlighted in census data released recently by Statistics Canada ? are resulting in a sort of super-sizing of the sandwich generation.

    There are incentives to consider the option of moving Mom and Dad into your home or moving your family into their home

    The increase in rates of senior or ?grey? divorce means higher odds of caring for divorced parents and maybe even their new partners. As if caring for your married parents isn?t tough enough, we might see a generation of Baby Boomers providing elder care for parents in multiple locations.

    About one-quarter of the so-called sandwich generation already has a second slice on top since they care for two or more seniors.

    The trend towards having children at a later age also puts more people in the position of having to care for both children and parents. And since people are simply having fewer children period, there are less children to care for the growing ranks of the elderly.

    The term ?sandwich generation? was coined by American social worker Dorothy Miller in 1981. A generation later, more than one-quarter of today?s Canadians aged 45-64 have children living with them and also perform some sort of elder care.

    Since eight out of 10 in the sandwich generation are also working, it?s not surprising to see more and more retirement homes and nursing care options becoming available to provide the care they may not have the time to provide themselves. In some cases, it?s just not an option for the elderly to live on their own. That said, not all seniors have the resources to afford these facilities ? nor do all of their children.

    Beyond the stress of physically caring for parents comes the stress of caring for their money

    Statistics Canada reports the number of seniors living with relatives or non-relatives in a private dwelling increased from 285,370 to 393,150 from 2001 to 2011.

    There are incentives to consider the option of moving Mom and Dad into your home or moving your family into their home. Selling your parents? home or your home could provide funds to use towards their care. It could also reduce the commuting costs of going back and forth from your home to theirs, since they are not likely to live close by.

    And given that Statistics Canada reports that 15% of sandwiched workers have to reduce their work hours, having your parents in your home could mean more time to get the job done ? both your day job and your night job. After all, there are only so many hours in the day.

    Beyond the stress of physically caring for parents comes the stress of caring for their money. And practically speaking, there are typically two different problems when it comes to Mom and Dad?s money ? they either have too little or too much.

    Too little means they might become a financial burden on you. And if you have siblings, deciding how to split the cost of care can be a delicate subject. Should the cost be split equally? Should the oldest child step to the plate? Should the wealthiest child bear more of the burden? Or the one who makes more money? Or the one who got more financial support from their parents over the years?

    Having too much money, while seemingly less of a problem, isn?t always so. One child may want to keep the funds intact in their parents? names, while others might push for an early advance of their inheritance. Beyond that, it?s common to see situations where strategies to move money from one generation to the next or to reduce taxes or probate defeat the original intention or lead to significant costs ? both financially and on family ties ? ranging from mistakes to disagreements to litigation.

    The good news on the tax front is that the Canada Revenue Agency provides incentives to Canadians who are caring for elders. It?s possible a senior (or anyone, for that matter) may qualify for a tax credit called the ?disability amount? if they suffer from prolonged symptoms that inhibit their performance of the activities of daily living. Nursing home and caregiver costs may be claimed as medical expenses for another tax credit. And beyond that, there are additional tax credits for ?infirm dependents? as well as ?caregivers? depending on whether or not a senior lives with you or depends on you financially for support.

    Having three generations under one roof is more common elsewhere in the world, but perhaps less so here in North America ? right now. One problem with this option is that it could raise an interesting dilemma ? that is, what if you take in your divorced parent and subsequently need to provide care to your other parent? Or maybe your parent has remarried and they require help as a couple? What if your parent passes away and their spouse still requires assistance? Maybe you inherit the house that the spouse is living in?

    Odds are moving more in favour of being presented with such situation and Baby Boomers have some decisions to make in the not-so-distant future to ensure they can digest the double-decker sandwich they could soon be served.

    Stress is the reaction to internal and external factors that surpasses an individual?s ability to cope. It varies from person to person.

    Stress has a threefold impact in the workplace ? Emotional, physical and behavioral. A simple example would be that job stress can lead to irritability, anxiety, panic (emotional), elevated blood pressure (physical) and frequent anger outbursts at home and in office (behavioral).

    Stress inducing factors in the Corporate

    • Continuous worry about projects, deadlines, and performance assessments.
    • Pressure to perform & low job satisfaction.

    • Anxiety due to downsizing, layoffs & management changes.

    Black Sheep Restaurant is set to open in the next couple weeks.? The ownership closed their previous downtown venture Chew to relocate to a property they own that is larger and will allow more seats and more business.? The goal is to be a farm to table restaurant and if their other Venture of Orsay is any example of the food and service we are all in for a treat.? The location is at the corner of Margaret and Oak in the Riverside / Five Points district.?

    A Ray of Hope

    Every day until the election, Slate will offer up one reason to be optimistic for your candidate.

    Today?s Good News for Obama: Both the Obama and Romney campaigns continue to hit Ohio hard, crisscrossing the state this week. And for good reason: If Obama wins the Buckeye State, he can lose Virginia and Florida and still win the election. If Romney wins Ohio, his path to 270 electoral votes becomes much clearer. (No Republican president has moved into the White House without moving Ohio into the win column.) But as Election Day draws closer, Obama?s lead there has remained small but consistent, standing today at about 5 points. It may not seem like much, but that 51 to 46 margin may be the one that matters most.

    How Some Colleges Are Improving Black Graduation Rates

    While college-degree attainment for black students remains persistently low, some colleges and universities are implementing programs that are helping boost graduation rates, a new study shows.

    About half of the public and private schools between 2004 and 2010 either improved their graduation rates or closed the attainment gaps for black students by an average of 8 percentage points.

    The top-gainer universities boosted graduation rates without reducing black college enrollment, according to the report ??Advancing to Completion: Increasing Degree Attainment by Improving Graduation Rates and Closing the Gaps for African-American Students.?

    The modest gains, the authors of the report argue, show that universities can reverse the trend of low academic completion regardless of their starting point.

    ?Our nation will be well-served if more colleges and universities validate and replicated the equity-minded policies of those institutions that are getting it done,? according to the report.

    Here are some key programs and initiatives from schools that have closed the graduation gaps or have made gains in boosting degree-completion rates:

    • San Jose State University and California State Long Beach, among the top 25 schools that improved graduation rates for minority students, implemented programs, such as the Graduation Initiative and the African American Initiative, to boost graduation rates and cut the completion gap in half for minority students.
    • ?The State University at Albany in New York holds regular meetings between academic and student-affairs staff to identity early those students at risk of dropping out.
    • Students at Virginia Commonwealth University follow a cohort curriculum in which the cohort take the same classes with the same professor, and get specialized support services. The university has special programs, such as mentoring programs for black students in science, technology, engineering, and math areas. Joseph Marolla, vice provost for instruction and student success, told the study?s authors that small classes and cohort learning has reduced the proportion of students who fail, drop out, or withdraw from courses.
    • At the start of each semester school officials at the University of Southern California seek out the students who are not yet registered for the upcoming semester, and pairs students with the services they need to register. The private school, which has closed the graduation gap between whites and minority students, created a database where academic advisers from various majors and minors could access the academic record of each student as well as his or her four-year plan, which is audited periodically.?

    Still, the national graduation rates for black students remain worrisome. Black college completion rates were either stagnant or dipped slightly during the six-year period.? For instance, 40.6 percent of blacks in 2010 completed an undergraduate degree within six years, compared with 41.2 percent in 2004.

    The top private universities with increases in graduation rates, between 2004-2010:

    ? ? 1. Northwood University (Texas): up 24.7 percentage points, to 40 percent.

    ? ? 2. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York: up 23.7 percentage points, to 87 percent.

    ? ? 3. Tiffin University, Ohio: up 22.0 percentage points, to 34.8 percent.

    ? ? 4. Andrews University, Michigan: up 22.1 percentage points, to 65 percent.

    ? ? 5. University of the Arts, Pennsylvania: up 21.8 percentage points, to 64.7 percent.

    The top public universities that saw graduation rates increase:

    1. California University of Pennsylvania: up 33 percentage points, to 60.5 percent.
    2. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona: up 29.6 percent, to 53.9 percent.
    3. Towson University: up 22.8 percent, to 74 percent.

    Hospital systems in Hampton Roads are joining a nationwide trend towards wellness and prevention ? starting with their employees. Many organizations have hired wellness coordinators, provided free fitness programs for employees and thrown in financial perks for those who agree to fill out risk assessments or work with a health coach.

    Bon Secours Hampton Roads is one of the local systems leading the way in employee wellness initiatives with at least one huge financial incentive: bringing down the costs of employee health care.

    At Bon Secours a variety of employee wellness initiatives are being used to help record, track, and improve changes in employee health throughout the three hospital system. Among them is the no-nicotine hiring policy started Nov. 30, 2011. A ?Rethink Your Drink? campaign reduced the size of sugary beverages served in the hospital cafeterias and incorporated healthier drinks like coconut water this year. An on-site clinic for employees will open at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth next month. With help from the weight loss and nutrition experts at Bon Secours In Motion clinics, Bon Secours also launched a free 13-week fitness program this summer called ?Team Lean,? which helps selected employees work to lose weight and live healthier with personal training sessions and nutrition education.

    Australia?s premier all-rounder, Shane Watson, is all praise for South Africa?s Jacques Kallis, and believes that the 36-year-old cricketer is one of the living legends.

    The world of cricket has seen a number of great all-rounders over the years, like Sir Gary Sobers, Imran Khan, Sir Richard Hadlee and Kapil Dev, but the cricketer from Cape Town is right up there with his fantastic achievements in the last 17 years.

    In the 155 Tests, 321 One Day Internationals and 22 T20s, Kallis has almost 25 thousand runs under his belt. On top of that, the great sportsman has picked up more than 550 international wickets, which is an extra-ordinary achievement. The legendary all-rounder is also considered to be one of the finest slip fielders of the modern-day sport.

    Watson, who himself has emerged as one of the world?s top all-rounders, expressed that Kallis? statistics are amazing and every budding cricketer dreams of such an illustrious career.

    "Just in Test cricket to have played over 150 matches (156) and scoring at an average of over 58 (56 plus) and getting more than 250 wickets (280), is something that people just dream of. It is a privilege being out playing in the same era as him," the Aussie all-rounder said.

    Both these cricketers are currently taking part in the ICC World T20 2012, which is being played in Sri Lanka. The two all-rounders are extremely crucial for their teams' success, and have already made an impact on the tournament. Watson has so far grabbed two Man of the Match awards in the event; whereas, the South African has one.

    The cricketer from Queensland praised Kallis? ability to adjust his game according to different formats, and rates him among the best.

    "He is a world-class T20 player and look at the way he has adapted being a world-class all-rounder. For me, if he is not the best, he will still be among the best couple to have played the game," added Watson.

    South Africa and Australia are scheduled to play against each other on September 30th in a Super 8 clash at Colombo.

    Immune system molecule affects our weight

    ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have identified a molecule in the immune system that could affect hunger and satiety. The researchers hope that new treatments for obesity will benefit from this finding.

    Interleukin-6 is a chemical messenger in our immune system that plays an important role in fighting off infection. However, recent research has, surprisingly, shown that it can also trigger weight loss. Researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, have been investigating and managed to identify the specific types of brain cells that are targeted by the interleukin-6 molecule.

    The results show that the cells that are affected by interleukin-6 produce substances that not only affect our sense of hunger and fullness but also control the body's ability to burn fat. "Interleukin-6 increases levels of substances in the brain that trigger weight loss, which could explain why high levels of this molecule lead to weight loss," says doctoral student Erik Sch?le, who is presenting the results in his thesis.

    It is known that our normally low levels of interleukin-6 in the brain increase dramatically during an infection, typically accompanied by reduced hunger and fatigue.

    "Our previous findings would indicate that interleukin-6 can play a key role in regulating the metabolism of healthy individuals too," says Erik Sch?le.

    "This is clearly substantiated by our finding that mice which lack interleukin-6 get fat, and that the metabolism of rats injected with interleukin-6 directly into the brain increases."

    Although it is not yet fully understood how interleukin-6 in the brain affects bodyweight, the researchers have concluded that anyone whose brain produces plenty of interleukin-6 could be protected against overweight. The thesis also shows that our gut bacteria indirectly affect the substances in the brain that regulate bodyweight.

    "This is both surprising and new. It could in the long run lead to people fighting obesity by changing what they eat in line with how it affects the brain," says Erik Sch?le.

    Father of four killed after card game, gunman is sentenced - 620 WTMJ

    RACINE, Wis. - Tension during a game of cards in Racine led one player to leave and return with a gun.

    Now, the gunman, 28 year old Jeremiah Brown has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to second degree reckless homicide while armed.

    At his sentencing hearing Friday, Brown apologized to the victim's family, saying he told responsibility for this "senseless act."??

    Thirty-four-year-old Terrell Byers was killed.

    Fiona Apple Makes Bizarre Statement After Arrest

    ALTJust days after getting arrested at a border stop for hashish possession, singer-songwriter Fiona Apple hit the stage for a concert in Houston where she made quite the confusing statement.

    Apple, 35, was apprehended with undisclosed amounts of hashish on her tour bus, and was being held at Hudspeth County Jail. Sierra Blanca is a census-designated place in Texas' eastern county of Hudspeth, just north of the Mexican-American border.

    Her fans quickly took to Twitter with the hashtag "freefiona". No guessing how they'll react to this confusing apology of sorts.
