Poster Advertisement Advertisements On The ... - Real Estate blog

Successful real-estate advertising is a mix of great stills and great words, each as critical as the other in captivating the right purchasers to your listing. This has got to be the very first thing considered when creating your advert campaign. Tip one : Write for your readers? Not only is it crucial to write in a fashion that will appeal to your target audience, nevertheless it is similarly critical to think about the location in which the ad will be shown. Not to mention the proven fact that there are a ton of property for sale at the moment that have not sold, some individuals say that is good because every one that sells too inexpensive, ends up driving down evaluations and wounding things worse. Purchasers reading an editorial in the estate section of a paper need to read a completely unique story about a property or the way of living it offers, not only a listing of features about the home.

Indeed, there remain a big numbers of properties in the retail sector in shopping arcades, with massive vacancy rates. If you're a writer and plan on writing about this industry, commercial real-estate or commercial construction subjects that I have got a few suggestions for you. Specifically , people in the business need to know which properties have sold, which projects are slated, which developments have been fast tracked by the town to boost business development, and they would like to know the statistical data and increases in the marketplace for retail space, warehouse space, business office space, and multiple unit housing. Once a month we'd make a visit to a local greenback store. We'd then search for items that seemed as if they could have cost around $5-10. We searched for items round the vacation of the month ( as most months have a vacation ) like ceramic jack-o-lanterns, tiny flags, ceramic turkeys, chocolate roses, and so on.

We might then wrap the things in tissue paper and fasten a card and little note with ribbon and hand deliver these to one 6th of our SOI every month ? so that person on our SOI ( that lived hereabouts ) received 2 gifts annually. Whether or not it is a little bit of mould, that may simply and quickly be cleaned up, it can cost the owner many thousands of bucks, not merely in legal costs but also in ripping out the walls and replacing them. The counsel has a bunch of chums who will come and check it and they may file a case with the court. It's a sickening thing that goes on, but in the final analysis, the people that are hurt worse are the poor folk as there are less owners content to risk their neck and buy properties to hire out. Then the counsels works extremely tough to call the owner a slumlord and annihilate his private credibility and personality in the local media.

LinkedIn's 4Q earnings strong, revenue doubles

(AP) ? LinkedIn reported a strong fourth quarter as the online professional-networking service added 14 million members. Its net income and revenue beat Wall Street's expectations.

The results announced Thursday provided further evidence of online networking's popularity and moneymaking potential.

LinkedIn Corp.'s performance could help create even more excitement for an upcoming initial public offering of stock from Facebook Inc., which runs the Internet's largest social network. Facebook, which connects far more people than LinkedIn, filed its IPO papers last week, setting the stage for its stock market debut in May or June.

LinkedIn earned $6.9 million, or 6 cents per share, during the final three months of last year. In 2010, the company had income of $1.6 million, or 3 cents per share. It's not directly comparable because LinkedIn's outstanding shares have ballooned since its own IPO in May. Excluding the difference in outstanding shares between the two periods, LinkedIn's net income for the latest quarter increased 30 percent.

If not for certain accounting items unrelated to its ongoing business, LinkedIn said it would have earned 12 cents in the fourth quarter. That figure topped the average estimate of 7 cents per share among analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue more than doubled from the previous year to nearly $168 million ? about $8 million above analyst estimates.

Management's projections for the first quarter and full year also called for revenue above analyst forecasts.

LinkedIn, which is based in Mountain View, California, ended December with 145 members, up from 131 million in September. Since the end of the year, Linkedin said its membership has surpassed 150 million.

Investors cheered the numbers. LinkedIn's stock surged $5.31, or nearly 7 percent, to $81.70 in extended trading Thursday.

Simon Cowell Scoffs at Beyonce Rumor, Jabs at The Voice

Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and Steve Jones may be out, but Simon Cowell is in. All in. He's the man behind The X Factor and, to his credit, the first to admit that season one did not go as planned.

"Can I do it better than last year? Yes. Will it be better? Yes. But that takes hard work and a lot of planning," the judge/producer says in a new chat with Extra.

So... who might Simon bring in to assist with that task? Did he really offer Beyonce $100 million to join the panel? Cowell addresses these topics in the following interview excerpts.

Simon Cowell Photograph

On letting Abdul go: “I would’ve liked to have kept her. She was very gracious and I said that to her. She understands it’s business; it’s never personal.”

Did he really make that offer to Beyonce? “I have no clue where that came from... The budget for the show is $100 million. That would never, ever happen. It’s absolute nonsense... Even if you had that kind of money. I wouldn’t spend $100 million on one person.”

Does he want Mariah Carey as a judge? "I would love her. But you can’t expect someone who’s just had two kids to make the kind of commitment you would need on this show.”

Madonna? "Great” but “expensive.”

Katy Perry? "Fun - and she’s feisty.”

About those judges on The Voice... “I would ask how many records have they made, how many artists have they discovered. That’s where we have to be different on the judging panel. It’s very important that you have people on the panel that have actually signed and made artists successful all over the world, not just have made hit records yourself. That’s why you have a judging panel.”

Physical activity yields feelings of excitement, enthusiasm

ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2012) ? People who are more physically active report greater levels of excitement and enthusiasm than people who are less physically active, according to Penn State researchers. People also are more likely to report feelings of excitement and enthusiasm on days when they are more physically active than usual.

"You don't have to be the fittest person who is exercising every day to receive the feel-good benefits of exercise," said David Conroy, professor of kinesiology. "It's a matter of taking it one day at a time, of trying to get your activity in, and then there's this feel-good reward afterwards."

Conroy added that it often is hard for people to commit to an exercise program because they tend to set longterm rather than short-term goals.

"When people set New Year's resolutions, they set them up to include the entire upcoming year, but that can be really overwhelming," he said. "Taking it one day at a time and savoring that feel-good effect at the end of the day might be one step to break it down and get those daily rewards for activity. Doing this could help people be a little more encouraged to stay active and keep up the program they started."

The researchers asked 190 university students to keep daily diaries of their lived experiences, including free-time physical activity and sleep quantity and quality, as well as their mental states, including perceived stress and feeling states. Participants were instructed to record only those episodes of physical activity that occurred for at least 15 minutes and to note whether the physical activity was mild, moderate or vigorous. Participants returned their diaries to the researchers at the end of each day for a total of eight days. The researchers published their results in the current issue of the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology.

According to Amanda Hyde, kinesiology graduate student, the team separated the participants' feeling states into four categories: pleasant-activated feelings exemplified by excitement and enthusiasm, pleasant-deactivated feelings exemplified by satisfaction and relaxation, unpleasant-activated feelings exemplified by anxiety and anger, and unpleasant-deactivated feelings exemplified by depression and sadness.

"We found that people who are more physically active have more pleasant-activated feelings than people who are less active, and we also found that people have more pleasant-activated feelings on days when they are more physically active than usual," said Hyde, who noted that the team was able to rule out alternative explanations for the pleasant-activated feelings, such as quality of sleep.

"Our results suggest that not only are there chronic benefits of physical activity, but there are discrete benefits as well. Doing more exercise than you typically do can give you a burst of pleasant-activated feelings. So today, if you want a boost, go do some moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise."

Conroy added that most previous studies have looked only at pleasant or unpleasant feelings and paid less attention to the notion of activation.

"Knowing that moderate and vigorous physical activity generates a pleasant-activated feeling, rather than just a pleasant feeling, might help to explain why physical activity is so much more effective for treating depression rather than anxiety," he said. "People dealing with anxious symptoms don't need an increase in activation. If anything, they might want to bring it down some. In the future, we plan to look more closely at the effects of physical activity on mental health symptoms."

Other authors on the paper include Aaron Pincus, professor of psychology, and Nilam Ram, assistant professor of human development and family studies and of psychology.

National Institute on Aging and the Penn State Social Science Research Institute funded this research.

Verizon to set up streaming service with Redbox

COMMERCIAL IMAGE - In this photograph taken by AP Images for Redbox, Bob Mudge, right, president of Verizon Consumer and Mass Business Markets, and Paul Davis, CEO of Coinstar, Inc. announced today, Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, in New York, a joint venture that delivers a combination of Redbox entertainment options with an on-demand streaming service from Verizon, Inc. Redbox Automated Retail, LLC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coinstar, Inc. (Diane Bondareff/AP Images for Redbox)

(AP) ? Phone company Verizon Communications Inc. will challenge Netflix and start a video streaming service this year with Redbox and its DVD rental kiosks.

Verizon and Coinstar Inc., Redbox's parent company, said Monday that the service will be national and available to non-Verizon customers as well. It adds another dimension to Verizon's quest to become a force in home entertainment, and it looks set to compete to some extent with the cable-TV services it already sells.

Unlike competing services from Amazon.com Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the new service will combine Internet delivery of movies with DVDs, the way Netflix does. Dish Network Corp. also offers a similar bundle through its Blockbuster subsidiary.

Specific details and pricing of the new plan weren't announced.

Late last year, the companies were shopping around a $6-per-month offering that would give subscribers one DVD rental from Redbox per month as well as unlimited streaming of a certain selection of movies, according to a person briefed on the plan then. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

It's not known whether the plan has changed since then, though the price is likely to be less than the $16-a-month minimum that Netflix subscribers have to pay for a combined DVD-by-mail and streaming plan.

Although consumers would pay less, Redbox's inventory is limited to what's in its kiosks, compared with Netflix's library of more than 100,000 discs, including more obscure fare. Redbox customers will also have to go in person to pick up a disc, which saves the company mailing costs.

Getting an extensive library of streaming content to rival Netflix's 20,000-plus titles will be expensive. The rising cost for streaming rights is the main reason that Netflix raised its U.S. prices by as much as 60 percent last year in a move that triggered a customer backlash. At the end of 2011, Netflix had video licensing commitments totaling $3.9 billion worldwide over the next several years.

Redbox, whose DVD rental kiosks are located in more than 29,000 stores, has been looking to expand into online streaming for more than a year. Its business so far has revolved around renting DVDs for as little as $1.20 per day.

Verizon has its own cable-TV service, called FiOS, in some areas. Its Verizon Wireless subsidiary has also signed a deal to sell service from Comcast Corp. and other cable TV companies in its stores.

With the Redbox venture, Verizon is breaking ranks with the cable and satellite industry, which makes its own video streaming services available only to people who also subscribe to its traditional TV feeds. They don't want households switching to Internet-only services, which are cheaper. Netflix Inc. charges $8 per month for its streaming-only plan, for instance, while the average monthly cable bill is more than $70.

"We've made a conscious decision to innovate and get involved with this market because it's legitimate and growing, and we think the partnership with Redbox gives us huge upside," said Bob Mudge, president of Verizon's consumer business.

Verizon's own FiOS business is relatively small, with 4.2 million subscribers, making it the seventh-largest provider of TV signals to U.S. homes. Meanwhile, its landline phone business is shrinking, so it needs other avenues for growth. Its wireless arm is growing, but it owns only 55 percent of that venture. (Vodafone Group PLC of Britain owns the rest.)

Netflix, which is based in Los Gatos, Calif., ended last year with 24.4 million U.S. subscribers. About 8.4 million of those customers pay for Internet streaming and Netflix's DVD-by-mail rental service.

To build its streaming service, Verizon will take advantage of the relationships with Hollywood studios and other content producers it has built through FiOS, Mudge said.

Verizon and Coinstar said the service is intended to give subscribers access to DVD and Blu-ray discs as well as streaming movies starting in the second half of the year. Subscribers might visit the site to find that the movie they want isn't available for streaming, but is available at a Redbox kiosk nearby, said Paul Davis, the CEO of Coinstar.

To get people to try the service, Verizon and Redbox look set to undercut Netflix's cheapest DVD and streaming plan of $16 per month, which is 60 percent higher than its $10 monthly rate before prices went up in September.

New York-based Verizon Communications will own 65 percent of the unnamed venture, with Bellevue, Wash.,-based Coinstar owning the rest. Redbox is contributing an initial $14 million to the venture, according to a regulatory filing. It did not say how much Verizon would contribute. The filing indicated the two companies may be called upon to contribute a combined $450 million to the venture ? another indication that it will have to pay steep licensing fees.

Coinstar's stock gained 91 cents, or 1.8 percent, to close Monday at $50.56, after initially jumping 6.6 percent on the news. Verizon shares edged up 30 cents to $38.14. After initially falling on the news, Netflix shares gained $2.82, or 2.2 percent, to $129.25.

Netflix already has a couple of powerful competitors with video streaming services. Amazon.com provides a library of movies and TV shows to subscribers to its Amazon Prime shipping services. Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, has a streaming service called Vudu. Neither offers DVD rentals.

Netflix, though, isn't devoting much attention to its DVD rental service because it's convinced the discs are destined to become obsolete. Netflix lost 2.8 million DVD subscribers in the final three months of last year alone.

Netflix is hoping to differentiate itself from its rivals with a larger library that is just now starting to include content that hasn't been available anywhere else. The company's streaming library consists largely of older movie shows and TV episodes from past seasons. Netflix's first original TV series, an eight-episode drama called "Lilyhammer," debuted Monday. Other original TV series are coming in an attempt to make Netflix more competitive with Time Warner Inc.'s pay-TV channel HBO.

The additional competition in Internet streaming comes as Netflix recovers from the customers losses it absorbed last year following its price increase and a botched plan to spin off its DVD service into a separate website.

Redbox appears to have benefited from Netflix's troubles, picking up some of the customers who have defected from its DVD service. It now claims to be the biggest DVD rental service in the country.

Some former Komen supporters can't forgive, forget

(AP Photo/Brian Chilson)

(AP) ? When Dorothy Twinney first saw a Race for the Cure walk for breast cancer ? "a sea of pink" traveling through her hometown of Plymouth, Mich. ? she was so moved she sat in her car and wept.

This week, after watching The Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity announce plans to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, then abandon those plans amid a public furor, Twinney decided she was done with the organization for which she raised thousands of dollars on three-day, 60-mile walks that left her feet bloodied and blistered, but her spirits high.?

"It just feels like it's all tarnished now," the 41-year-old mother of two said. "Honestly, I'm not sure what they can do to change that."

At week's end, many longtime Komen supporters were feeling similarly conflicted. Some, depending on where they stood on the hot-button issue of abortion, called it more of a betrayal. Those who supported Komen's grants to Planned Parenthood for breast-cancer screenings called the initial move to cut them politically motivated; those opposed to the grants said the same thing about the reversal.

The outrage clearly stunned Komen, the country's most widely known breast cancer organization. "I think (Komen) has been horrified to be so caught up in this culture war," said Eric Scheidler, executive director of the Chicago-based Pro-Life Action League.

Many women described feeling caught in the middle when The Associated Press first reported on Tuesday that Komen had adopted criteria excluding Planned Parenthood from future breast screening grants because it was the subject of an investigation launched by a Florida congressman at the urging of anti-abortion groups. The grants totaled $680,000 in 2011.

Alyce Lee-Walker was one of them. A longtime Komen supporter, she'd never given money to Planned Parenthood. But when she learned of the funding cut, she immediately went online to donate $188 ? the 88 signifying good luck in Chinese.

She didn't stop there. The small business owner from Pinehurst, N.C., went about removing all the pink-ribbon stickers, a Komen symbol, that she'd affixed to her belongings.

"I took them off my personal car, the business car, off the doors in the office," she said. And that pink chef's knife she bought at Williams-Sonoma, with some of the proceeds going to Komen? "I'm done with that, too," she said.

When she worked on Wall Street, Lee-Walker once prowled the trading floor soliciting donations "from anyone who loved a sister, mother, wife ? or who was a fan of breasts," she quips. She raised $15,000. But now, Komen's reversal as well as its original move left her disgusted, she said: "It's all political."

Many shared that skepticism. "I'm wondering, is this really what they believe now, or is it just all the bad press that made them do it?" asked Mary Gauvin, a 27-year-old mother from Fort Drum, N.Y. "I doubt their motivation a bit."

Gauvin, a supporter in the past of both Planned Parenthood and Komen, said that now, if a friend asked for sponsorship in a Race for the Cure event, she would offer to give money instead to the American Cancer Society.

Also switching allegiance was Suzanne Strempek Shea, a novelist and college writing teacher in Northhampton, Mass. "If someone asks me to sponsor them," she said, "I'm going to say, 'I wish you well, but I'm going to give the amount I'd have given you to Rays of Hope," another breast cancer support group.

The issue was particularly painful to Shea, 51. She is a breast cancer survivor who discovered early warning signs at a Planned Parenthood breast screening (the group does screenings and refers some patients for mammograms).

"They found the cysts that led to the diagnosis. I don't think people realize all the good they do," Shea said. Horrified that a crucial women's health issue had become entwined with the abortion debate, she said that despite the reversal, "I'm still angry."

Even angrier about the reversal were anti-abortion advocates who'd applauded Komen's original move.

"We were very happy to see (Komen) discontinue funding to Planned Parenthood," said Tony Lauinger, state chairman for Oklahomans For Life. "For an entity ... that's trying to prevent breast cancer across the world, it's directly counterproductive that the organization would be giving funds to Planned Parenthood, which is the largest provider of abortions in the country."

Scheidler, of the Pro-Life Action League, sent out emails and social media messages Friday aimed at "tens of thousands" of abortion foes, urging them to withhold donations to Komen. Days earlier, when the original decision was reported, he'd urged people to donate to Komen.

Renee Wiesner, a mother of nine who opposes abortion, said she had been encouraged by Komen's original decision.

"I had known about the grants, and that's why I had avoided supporting Komen in the past," said Wiesner, of Aurora, Ill. Now, she said, she will wait for the furor to die down before deciding where to contribute.

She said she suspected the reversal was simply a PR move by Komen:? "They need to keep a good public image if they want to be as successful as they've been."

Not everyone was beating up on Komen. "They made a bad call, but they rethought their position," said Katie Ferdinand, 46, of Basking Ridge, N.J. "I'd consider supporting them going forward."

Before the reversal, Ferdinand had gone on Facebook and urged friends to join her in contributing to Planned Parenthood. The organization said it received $3 million between Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon, funds it said would be used to expand its breast health services, which now provide nearly 750,000 breast exams each year.

That made Planned Parenthood supporter Cindy Froggatt happy. "I am grateful to Komen for the unintended consequence of their misguided decision," said Froggatt, of Philadelphia. She especially admired the actions of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who himself made a $250,000 gift.

The controversy was rawest, it seemed, for breast cancer survivors, especially those, like Joyce Miller, who'd donated many hours of time to Komen. After her first breast cancer treatment, Miller spent an hour a day manning Komen's phone lines, for nearly two years.

"I do not forgive them," the 70-year-old Dallas woman said Friday, after the reversal. She said she was also thinking of her daughter, Twinney, the Michigan woman, who spent years on the breast cancer walks. "Those bloody feet," Miller said. "The aching back!"

As for Twinney, she didn't try to hold back the tears as she spoke of the years of fundraising, which included bartending stints to get cash together, and the three-day walks, buoyed by supporters including her two sons, who even agreed to dress in pink.

"Those weekends, on those walks, were some of the most special times of my life, next to the birth of my children," she said. "You met the best people in the world. This organization began for such a special reason. And I am just so disappointed right now."

Romney Wins Nevada Caucus with Double-Digit Lead (ContributorNetwork)

Mitt Romney won the Nevada caucus Saturday with a double-digit lead over his nearest competitor, according to the Associated Press. Newt Gingrich looked to take second place, with Ron Paul closely behind in third and Rick Santorum in fourth place.

Romney's win was not unexpected, as polling leading to Saturday had placed him firmly in the lead. He also carried the state in the 2008 primary season ahead of John McCain and Ron Paul.

Here are some of the key details coming out of the Nevada caucus.

* Polling by Public Policy Polling on Friday had projected Romney would garner approximately 50 percent of the vote, with Gingrich at 25 percent, Paul at 15 percent and Santorum at 8 percent.

* The poll had shown support for Romney was widespread among various groups, including men, women, conservatives, Mormons, whites and Hispanics.

* Mormons were projected to count for some 20 percent of the vote, with Romney estimated to garner approximately 78 percent of that demographic.

* Exit polling as of late Saturday placed Romney with at least 42 percent of the vote, according to the New York Times.

* Romney's numbers across various demographics went largely as polling in the days leading to the caucus indicated they would, although Paul was showing strength in the under-30 age bracket, with a projected 41 percent to Romney's 39 percent.

* Nevada divides its delegates among the competitors. So while winning means Romney will get the largest share, he will not get all 28 available delegates, according to the Wall Street Journal.

* Despite his second-place finish, Gingrich said in a news conference that he intends to continue his campaign through to August, when the Republican Party will hold its National Convention in Tampa, Fla., according to USA Today.

* Gingrich also repeated his claim that Romney is a "fundamentally dishonest" candidate. The original assertion came in response to the anti-Gingrich ads that Romney's campaign ran in Florida.

* According to Politico, Romney focused his attention on President Barack Obama in his speech, taking aim at the president for claiming what Romney called undeserved credit for the January jobs reports, which showed a decrease in unemployment nationwide.

Internet Marketing Will Build Your Business | Your Online Product ...

Online marketing is and satisfactory way to build your business. If you've a business in then you should invest in web marketing. After you've your internet site on the internet you then have to invest marketing funds for your S.E.O campaign. This stands for search engine optimization.

The higher your internet site is ranked in the search engine results the likelier you website will appear at the very top of the list when folks search for a business related to your business. This is also a great way to increase the business in in general. The base line about the internet is it is the way folks look for goods and services.

If you're not advertising online then you are simply behind the times. And you sales will reflect your being behind the modern selling times. There isn't any more walking thru the yellow pages. Today it's all about looking on the web.

There are plenty of ways in which you can publicize your business on the internet. But gone are the days that you could only place an internet site on the internet and expect the sales to role in. Before folks simply employed a web master to create a static page and then they called that a Net presence.

Sure you had a domain up but if it probably did nothing apart from tell a bit about your business and your services then folks would not go there very often. Instead you now need to provide valuable information on your internet site. And you want to update that frequently. You can also create a newsletter folk can sign up for and get valuable information sent right to their e-mail.

This way you may also send them regular sales specials by e-mail they might not have been aware of either. You may plug your company by offering free vouchers when they join up to your magazine. People like valuable information but they like saving cash far more.

The key to your online business is that you want to keep your visitors coming back. If you offer great free information and coupons they are going to keep coming back. You can also promote ad on items when people go to your internet site. If you sell bikes you can promote bicycle gear that you might not be well placed to promote in your store given the time you spend with your customer.

Or you may not need to sell him the whole store on his first visit. But after you have him on your e-mail list you can always suggest cycle accessories over a period thru e-mail promotions.

If the internet is something new for you then look into engaging a person who knows the right way to build websites and also is conversant with an internet marketing company. You may of course have an initial pay out. But take it slow to find the best person to do the web work for you at the most reasonable price. Overall you will increase your sales and build your business.

Hackers intercept FBI, Scotland Yard call (AP)

LONDON ? Trading jokes and swapping leads, investigators from the FBI and Scotland Yard spent the conference call strategizing about how to bring down the hacking collective known as Anonymous, responsible for a string of embarrassing attacks across the Internet.

Unfortunately for the cyber sleuths, the hackers were in on the call too ? and now so is the rest of the world.

Anonymous published the roughly 15-minute-long recording of the call on the Internet on Friday, gloating in a Twitter message that "the FBI might be curious how we're able to continuously read their internal comms for some time now."

The humiliating coup exposed a vulnerability that might have had more serious consequences had someone else been listening in on the line.

"A law enforcement agency using unencrypted, unsecure communications is a major fumble," said Marcus Carey, who spent years securing communications for the U.S. National Security Agency before joining security-risk assessment firm Rapid7.

"What if this event was talking about some terrorist plot to blow up something and 'they' were listening in? It could've been much worse if it was related to an al-Qaida plot or something ... So this is a lesson learned."

The leak was one of a slew of Anonymous hacks that hit websites across the United States Friday, including in Boston, where the police site was defaced, and in Salt Lake City, where officials said that personal information of confidential informants and tipsters had been compromised.

Anonymous also claimed credit for defacing the Greek Justice Ministry's website and stealing a mountain of data from the Virginia-based law firm that defended a U.S. Marine recently convicted for his role in the bloody 2005 raid in Iraq that became known as the Haditha massacre.

The hackers' successful attempt to spy on the very people charged with tracking them down remained the most dramatic coup of the day, with sensitive police conversations broadcast across the world.

The FBI said the communication "was intended for law enforcement officers only and was illegally obtained," but added that no FBI systems were breached. It said that "a criminal investigation is under way to identify and hold accountable those responsible."

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation, told The Associated Press that authorities were looking at the possibility the message was intercepted from the private email account of one of the dozens of invited participants ? who hailed from the U.K., Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Anonymous published just such an email Friday, complete with the date, time and password needed to access the call.

Graham Cluley, an expert with data security company Sophos, said that anyone with that information could have "rung in and silently listened to the call just like Anonymous did."

In Paris, a French police official who was briefed on the interception said it could prompt international law enforcement bodies to be more circumspect about sharing information in conference calls. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak on the record.

Scotland Yard said there was no immediate evidence their operations were compromised.

Amid jokes about a teenage hacking suspect (who one officer describes as "a bit of an idiot") and lighthearted banter about McDonald's, the investigators on the call discussed whether to delay the arrest of two hacking suspects to give the FBI more time to pursue its side of the investigation.

Updates were given on the status of inquiries stretching from Los Angeles and Baltimore to England and Ireland, with one member of Scotland Yard's central e-crime unit telling the FBI that British police had identified a 15-year-old with possible connections to a recent breach at U.S. videogame company Valve Corp.

"Yeah that's fantastic," an FBI official said in response. "We actually do have a pending investigation looking into that compromise."

An email to the FBI official leading the call was not immediately returned Friday, while the e-crime investigator referred questions to Scotland Yard's press office. The press office confirmed it had someone on the call but said it would have no further comment.

Most sensitive appears to be discussion of what legal strategy to pursue in the cases of Ryan Cleary and Jake Davis, two British suspects linked to Anonymous. The U.K. police official on the call said prosecutors were secretly going to court to delay procedures in order to give the FBI more time pursue a related case.

When the FBI official thanked his U.K. counterpart for the favor, the Briton said cheerily: "We're here to help!"

Karen Todner, a lawyer for Cleary, said the recording could be "incredibly sensitive" and warned that such data breaches had the potential to derail the police investigation.

"If they haven't secured their email it could potentially prejudice the investigation," she told the AP.

Anonymous, an amorphous collection of Internet enthusiasts, pranksters and activists, has increasingly focused its attention on law enforcement agencies in general and the FBI in particular.

The hackers' targets have included the Church of Scientology, the music industry and financial companies such as Visa and MasterCard. It has recently expanded to include government, police and military targets.

Dozens of suspected members and supporters have been arrested across the world.

Journal of Psychopharmacology special issue on alcohol

London, UK A new editorial released this week offers clarity and structure on confusing drug and alcohol addiction terminology for prescribers, users and regulators. "Through a glass darkly: can we improve clarity about mechanism and aims of medications in drug and alcohol treatments?" is published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, the official journal of the British Association for Psychopharmacology, published by SAGE.

David Nutt and Anne Lingford-Hughes of Imperial College London's Neuropsychopharmacology Unit together with Jonathan Chick from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh suggest that a better understanding of current treatments' modes of action and targets would aid understanding in the addiction field. This should be coupled with clarity as to exactly which patient groups or symptom stages each treatment works upon, they recommend.

Nutt's team discuss the differing uses of terms such as addiction and dependence, and outline the three main treatment avenues for addiction or dependence on drugs or alcohol: withdrawal treatment, substitution therapy and abstinence. Withdrawal treatment is typically well understood, but elements of the other two categories remain open to interpretation.

Physicians prescribe substitutes to prevent drug withdrawal, a preferred treatment avenue for many patients. Interaction with treatment providers can lead to patients gaining assistance with other problems, while still dependent on a drug, albeit a less harmful one. Debate still rages about methadone and buprenorphine use for heroin addiction, despite proof that these substitutes can reduce related crime, HIV spread and overdose deaths. Offering benzodiazepines or sodium oxybate (GHB) as a substitute in alcoholism treatment is even more controversial, and is not supported by some guidelines (e.g. NICE, 2011), despite evidence of efficacy. Anti-smoking aids such as patches and gum, though not labelled as such, are 'substitution' therapies because in practice many patients use these long-term.

The authors discuss definitions of abstinence - the most widely recognised goal for addiction treatment. Abstinence strictly means cutting out the addictive substance without substitution. However, some use the term to describe abstinence from street drugs while using substitute medication. Anti-depressants or anti-psychotics may be allowed if there is a mental health issue, where medications which target 'addiction' would be unacceptable.

Harm reduction - any intervention that reduces the harms of drug/alcohol use - includes social measures such as needle exchanges. In the UK this term may mean substitution treatment, particularly for heroin addiction.

The article details opioid substitution therapies, and antagonist medications such as naltrexone and nalmefene that promote abstinence. The authors also look at the pharmacological arsenal against alcohol addiction. Substitution is not such a well-worn route in this case as it is for opioids or tobacco: treatments such as sodium oxybate and baclofen may cut withdrawal and reduce drinking, and physicians can prescribe acamprosate to promote abstinence. Vitamins are also useful in harm reduction. Drink-regulating agents like naltrexone are a recent innovation, which aims to reduce the number of drinks taken at any one session. The exact terminology for this class of drugs has yet to be agreed.

Substitution has been the mainstay of treatment for tobacco addiction for years. The antidepressant bupropion (Zyban) also assists with abstinence from cigarettes. Vaccines against nicotine are also in clinical trials. As yet there are no proven pharmacological treatments for other drug addictions such as cocaine/crack dependence. Cannabis dependence is another recognized problem without proven pharmacological treatment, the authors say.

"We have seen the development and use of different terminologies for different drug addictions, which confuses prescribers, users and regulators alike," says Nutt. "Alcohol/drug dependence and addiction are huge medical as well as social problems for the treatment of which new medications could be helpful. A better understanding of the modes of actions and targets for current treatments is required."

Nasdaq quarterly profit falls (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Nasdaq OMX Group Inc's (NDAQ.O) quarterly profit declined due to a number of expenses, but when stripping out the one-time charges, the Nasdaq stock market parent beat analysts' expectations.

Nasdaq earned $82 million, or 45 cents per diluted share, in the fourth quarter, down from $137 million, or 69 cents per share, a year ago.

Excluding one-time items, it earned 63 cents a share, compared to 55 cents in the year prior quarter.

Revenue rose 6 percent to $422 million.

Analysts on average expected the New York-based company to earn 61 cents per share, excluding items, on $417.16 million in revenue.

"Investments in new initiatives, contributions from acquisitions, and capital deployment decisions all contributed to our success despite the backdrop of a difficult macroeconomic environment," Bob Greifeld, chief executive of Nasdaq, said in a statement.

Nasdaq, which runs U.S. and Nordic markets, said stock trading revenue was up 2 percent from a year earlier, while derivatives trading and clearing revenues slipped 1 percent due in part to a loss in market share. Market data revenues were up 10 percent due to higher demand.

Total market share of U.S. equity options was 27.2 percent, compared to 31.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Elsewhere, EU antitrust regulators stopped the merger of Deutsche Boerse (DB1Gn.DE) and NYSE Euronext (NYX.N) on Wednesday, saying the combined group would have a stranglehold of the listed European futures market and would thwart new entrants.

In the past year the sector has seen three other large deals fail, including one in which Nasdaq was the suitor:

Nasdaq and IntercontinentalExchange Inc's (ICE.N) bid for NYSE Euronext was rejected by the U.S. Department of Justice, London Stock Exchange's takeover of TMX Group was rejected by shareholders of the Toronto Stock Exchange operator, and Singapore Exchange Ltd's (SGXL.SI) bid for Australia's ASX Ltd (ASX.AX) was stopped by the Australian government.

Review: Super Bowl online decent, won't replace TV (AP)

NEW YORK ? The television set won't be the only place to watch video of the New York Giants and the New England Patriots this Sunday. For the first time, U.S. football fans will be able to watch the Super Bowl live on a computer or on a phone.

You may be wondering whether anyone without super-strength eyesight would be able to follow the football on a tiny phone screen. And what about the ads? After all, many people tune in more for the commercials than for the game.

I got a chance to test the offering with a pair of playoff games and last weekend's all-star Pro Bowl. Although it's impossible to say what will happen Sunday, I have found the experience decent so far, but no substitute for the big screen.

The phone offering is made possible through a collaboration involving the National Football League, Comcast Corp.'s NBC and Verizon Wireless. The nation's largest wireless carrier had rights to carry NBC's Sunday night broadcasts live during the regular season, as well as some games from the NFL Network and ESPN. The post-season games broadcast by NBC are an extension of that package.

That means you'll need service through Verizon Wireless to watch on an iPhone or an Android phone (The game won't be available on the iPad). You'll also need Verizon's V Cast video service, which costs $3 a day or $10 a month on top of your regular phone bill. A generous data plan or a Wi-Fi connection will help you avoid additional charges.

If you don't have the right phone or wireless carrier, or if you have a super-cheap data plan with low caps, you can watch for free on a computer instead at NBCSports.com. You can interact with the game more that way, but you won't get the same commercials.

To get started on the phone, you need to install the NFL Mobile software. The app is free; it's the software's live video that requires V Cast. You can get the app on the phone through the Android Market or Apple's app store. Or you can go to http://www.verizonwireless.com/nfl and enter your cellphone number. A text message will be sent with a link to get your app. You can also call the NFL by hitting the star key twice and dialing 635. That will also get you a link via text.

The video is easy to find once you open the app.

You get the full NBC broadcast, including replays, announcers and on-screen graphics. You also get the halftime show and national commercials. NBC's peacock logo came up when my local NBC station was showing ads for local merchants such as car dealers and banks.

As for the football, I was surprised how well I was able to follow it. I wasn't able to track the ball for some of the passes and field goal kicks, but I was able to follow it on runs. Sure, the ball is small, but your eyes are much closer to the screen. So proportionally, it's somewhat comparable to what you'd get standing several feet away from the TV.

The video quality was adequate over a cellular connection. Some of the players looked more like video game characters than real people, reminding me of the early days of Internet video. Quality improved with a Wi-Fi connection because more data can be sent without worrying about congestion or data charges.

Video on the phone lagged the TV broadcast by about 30 seconds, so don't fall for any instant bets your TV-watching friends try to make with you. If others are watching in the next room, be prepared for cheers and jeers before you see the action.

Also, for the first half-hour, the app will ask you a few times whether you are really there. The video stops if you don't confirm your presence. I found it disruptive, though Verizon says it's to ensure that people don't inadvertently run up data charges.

And if you were able to snag tickets to the Super Bowl, don't expect to watch the game on the phone. Verizon will block the video in and around the stadium to avoid overrunning its network. Besides, if you made all that effort to be there in person, you should be watching the field, not your phone.

The experience on the computer is different. Online video lagged the TV broadcast by a full minute ? enough for an interception and touchdown.

As was the case with the playoffs and the Pro Bowl, online video ads will replace the ones shown on TV. However, NBC says it will make the television ads available on demand soon after they run, so you won't have to miss out on all the chatter about the best and worst Super Bowl commercials. It's also a place to go if you missed one on TV. The phone won't have commercials on demand.

Other extras on NBC's video player include multiple viewing angles. Besides the main television feed, you can watch from the end zone or the sideline or a camera that locks in on the "star" ? typically whoever has the ball. You can watch two feeds at once ? one in a smaller window within the larger one. You can also get Twitter updates, players' stats and more.

The Web player also lets you pause, rewind or start from the beginning, just like a digital video recorder. With the mobile app, you're stuck with the live feed.

And with a good broadband connection, you don't have to worry about data charges.

One of the games I tested over a cellular connection used up 425 megabytes of data, including the halftime show. Fortunately, I was able to keep an unlimited plan I had before Verizon started capping usage for new subscribers. If you're on the basic, $30-a-month plan, one game will eat up a quarter of your monthly 2 gigabyte allocation. There's not much left for email, YouTube, Facebook and other mobile time sinks.

Hardcore football fans might be thinking: "Why would anyone want to watch the big game on a phone or a computer screen?"

I agree there's no replacing the experience on a thousand-inch flat screen, with a bowl of chips and other artery-cloggers within reach.

But I can think of a few scenarios where it could be useful. If you're en route to a Super Bowl party, you can have the game on in the car or bus (not if you're driving, please). You can follow along on your device as you walk to the door for your pizza delivery.

Or if you're with friends who couldn't care less about the game, you can have it on and still be with them ? physically, at least.
